What Is Functional Neurology?

Functional neurology is a broad term that encompasses a variety of evidence-based therapies used to treat neurological disorders and improve brain function and structure. Here at NeuraPerformance Brain Center - A Plasticity® Company, we use our state-of-the-art technologies, including GyroStim and Dynavision D2, to help our patients on the road to recovery from concussions, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological conditions. We also have many patients who are athletes looking to improve their performance, and because functional neurology works to improve brain health and function, athletes who train their brain, as well as their body, can get an edge on the competition. We combine visual, auditory, vestibular,  and cognitive activities to promote brain health and well-being.

Functional Neurology Can Help With

Balance

Concussion Recovery

Athletic Performance

And More

GyroStim

GyroStim is an advanced brain training technology that involves patients being safely rotated in a multi-axis chair while being asked to perform cognitive and physical challenges. Depending on the brain training activity, you may be using targets to reinforce spatial awareness, using a laser pointer to challenge your sensorimotor system, practicing situational challenges, and more! Our team will work with you to identify your needs/goals and create a customized plan to help you accomplish them.

Concussion Recovery

Brain training with GyroStim can also help people seeking to recover from a concussion, traumatic brain injury, or a multitude of other neurological conditions. At lower levels of intensity, the GyroStim can apply gentle, multi-axis visual-vestibular stimulation. This is great for people recovering from TBI or other neurological conditions. For athletes looking to improve their performance, the GyroStim can be moved more quickly, providing a three-dimensional training space that challenges and improves cognition and reaction speed.

Dynavision D2

Dynavision D2 is a state-of-the-art performance evaluation and training devices used in neuro and vestibular rehabilitation. Here at NeuraPerformance Brain Center - A Plasticity® Company, we use it to help clients of all ages, and we utilize it for gaze and gait stabilization. It is also used for concussion baseline testing and concussion recovery. We also have a significant number of athletes who come to our Denver brain center to improve their abilities, and the Dynavision D2 light board helps them make better, faster decisions during a game.

The D2 light board is mounted on the wall and contains 64 raised light switches arranged in five rings. When using the Dynavision D2 for therapy, you will stand in front of the wall and press the switches as they light up. The switches light up in two different colors and beep when pressed, which involves multiple senses — seeing the light, feeling the button, and hearing the sound.

With the Dynavision D2, we are able to track and record your reaction times, visual-motor coordination, and peripheral visual awareness.

Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is at the heart of functional neurology. In essence, neuroplasticity is the ability of the neural networks of the brain to change through growth and reorganization. These changes can range from new connections between neurons to larger changes in your brain's pathways. Neuroplasticity happens continually as you learn new information and your brain develops, but it can also be stimulated with brain training activities, like those we offer here at NeuraPerformance Brain Center - A Plasticity® Company. You can think of neuroplasticity as the ability to “rewire” your brain and optimize brain function and brain health.

Neuroplasticity is especially important for those recovering from a traumatic brain injury, as your brain needs to relearn and regrow pathways in order to restore brain functioning. Neuroplasticity also plays a role in anxiety and depression recovery and treatment for other mental illnesses. If your brain has created a connection between, say, public speaking and panic attacks, you can work to rewire that connection and build healthier pathways to reduce or even eliminate anxiety altogether. Along with our brain training technologies, we also offer counseling services as part of a holistic treatment plan.

Whether you’re looking to recover from a concussion, depression, or get an edge on the competition, your brain’s neuroplasticity will help you achieve your goals!
